As a depiction of the social world of the time, it was more particularistic, taking in only a few families. Matthee gets the reader emotionally tied to the story. Or explain his faults.
Kinda weirdly enjoyed this book way more than i thought, even though it was a required read.

Though burdened already with daily matters and a family of her own, Fiela takes the child in, and for nine years, she raises the child, vielas she names Benjamin, as one of her own children.
I didn’t notice until I was finished that it was first written in Africaans and then translated by the author. The characters became memorable. Benjamin has to now deal with the confining nature of the forest, which is a stark contrast to his life in the Long Kloof region.
